The California Grizzly Foundation is dedicated to the research and implementation of restoring the California Grizzly to the wild areas of our state. The Grizzly is the symbol of the California Republic, as exemplified by its' presence on the California State Flag, and deserves to be restored to its' natural habitat in some fashion.
The Frazier Park/Mt. Pinos/Lockwood Valley area was one of the most populous areas of the Grizzly before 1900, but the animal was eradicated over only a 10 year period, once hunting of it was allowed. The Monarch Grizzly, the largest Grizzly ever captured alive, was taken in Lockwood Valley, ransomed for $10,000.00 to the Hearst family, and thereafter kept in a cage in San Francisco. Other historical info regarding Grizzly bears in our area can be found in "Mines, Murders and Grizzlies", available through our foundation on floppy or CD.
Suffice it to say that the Grizzly roamed freely here with the Chumash Indians and the treasured California Condor, and we consider Frazier Park to be "The Grizzly Capital of California"! Our Foundation believes that this majestic animal can be intelligently restored in isolated locations in California. If you concur, and would like to join us in participating in this effort as a card-carrying member of the Foundation, please email us at shopoutdoors@shopoutdoors.com and request a membership information packet.
Grizzly Foundation Logo fundraising T-Shirts are available for $17.50, or they are included with your annual $25.00 membership fee. Gold and Platinum memberships are also available. Your support is greatly appreciated!
